Damn I'm aching...

Because of my sprained ankle and painful tooth I haven't been training much for the past two months and yesterday we had a really intense training session.
And now I'm feeling it >_<
When we were training line fighting there were no spears or pole-arms so it was rather intense close quarter fighting.
We still managed to route the other side quite regularly as they tended to fall back under our onslaught and eventually they collapsed again and again.

And tonight we have training again. Yay :)

And the weekend was quite good.
Friday was [livejournal.com profile] cyberglamours birthday drinks and we went to the a glorious Hungarian restaurant The Gay Hussar which was quite good and I definitely want to go there again.
Saturday was hectic as it was [livejournal.com profile] super_boobies's turn to have birthday drinks followed by a trip to Rockscene at The Dome in Tuffnell Park and then Slimes.
Had a good time at Slimes, got home waaaayyyy too late and slept right up until training Sunday.
All in all a great weekend and I'm suitably knackered today.

Met nice new people and got to see old friends I don't see nearly often enough...

Well, I think so :)

Anyway, great weekend.
Garlic & Shots was great and viking training was fantastic. I kicked ass and took names with the mighty Dane Axeand racked up an impressive body count.
You know you're doing something right when the resident Dane Axe training officer gets tired of getting killed by you and get a shield so he can defend better.
Damn that felt good :)

Speaking of which, next weekend there's a viking weekend party/training session in some woods near Broxbourne.
Those of us who fight will be fighting and anyone who wants to come along but aren't fighting will just be drinking, eating and carousing :)

So if you fancy coming along for that, give me shout some time during the week.
I'll be going up there either Friday evening or Saturday early afternoon.

And on a seperate note, for some reason I have recently been feeling like I'm living a Leonard Cohen song.
Most disconcerting...

There are exciting things afoot in the world of viking training...

Every year there's a big viking festival in Denmark at a place called Moesgård.
There are a few big battles to be fought and this year something terrible happened...

The Jomsvikings totally had their arses handed to them >_<
Obviously I wasn't there to help, otherwise things might have been different... coffcoff

The exciting news is that this state of affairs is intolerable and next year we must destroy that opposition completely and re-establish our dominance on the battlefield.
To achieve this we'll get extra training during the week specifically aimed at winning next year.
We'll be practicing a formation called 'The Tank' which will consist of a Shield Wall at the front, Spears in the 2nd row flanked by Dane-Axes (I'll be holding the left flank) and runners at the back to take advantage of any holes we punch in the opposite line.

The guy training us is a formerSAS guy and he expects peak performance.
Needless to say, that day will be set aside for viking training for the forseeable future :)
We expect it to be Thursdays, but the day hasn't been decided upon yet.

And obviously I'm ridiculously excited about this...

Righty ho, this weekend I went to Broxbourne to spend a weekend with the vikings.
What I get up to I'll try to post about later, but for now I give you all Pictures and a few videos:
Noel blowing his horn
Our fire
Katja and Dean wrestling with encouragement :)
A bit of fighting with a rather good hit in the nadgers :]
Dual Wielders 1-on-1
More fighting at a distance
Look at the wife beater picking on his girlfiend...
Spear vs Dane-axe
Knife Fighting very short

Hope you've all had a great weekend, I sure did :)

At some point I'll do a write-up of last week as it was one of the most memorable weeks this year and a strong contender for a life-time achievement award.

But for now I'll give you:
A crappy photo of me with my weapon of choice... )

183 days to go and all is quiet on the westernnorse front...

My life has been fairly quiet for a while now for various reasons. Primarily financial ones.
However, not going out means I can devote more time to important stuff...

I have also been working harder than just about any other time in my working life that I can think of. But it's worth it. For a long time my via luminosa has seemed unfathomably long and hard, but it now seems to be a road that'll be travelled with some ease. The main reasons for this is the payrise which should come into effect from the end of February. I don't know how much yet, but considering the starting salaryof the people in our server division, it's gonna be a significant (For me) amount. I have also just been told how much I'll be getting for being on call. At first it doesn't sound like much, but then I calculated huw much it would be considering the number of hours on is on call. I then recalculated. I then picked my jaw up from the floor and I have been unable to stop grinning since :]
Oh yes, I am definitely in a serious karma burn zone at the moment. I guess saving up all that good karma over the years is finally paying off...
And it looks like I'll be able to happily afford Wacken, M'era Luna and a full viking outfit. I have all the weapons I'll need on order. And ooohhh, I'm waiting excitedly for my Dane Axe...

This month is still gonna be harsh though as I need to survive somehow, while also buying my plane ticket to Lanzarote. I'm tempted to leave it until March, and then just take the extra financial hit out of the extra gold that will be in my monthly pot... But I really don't want to risk not being able to get a flight as I am not swimming there...

Weekend was good with lots of WoW and a nice dinner provided by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ditzy_pole. I am waiting for that poll you were gonna do :)
Viking training was fab as well. Lot's of good fighting and no spectacular bruises.
Speaking of which, a bunch of vikings will invade The Most Expensive Boozer in Christendom™ (Worlds End) tonight at 20:00. Ok, maybe not the most expensive, but it still brings a tear to my eye when I go to the counter and prepare for the financial rogering with a hedgehog-onna-stick. About £4 for a beer... Ouch.

After Forever last night rocked immensely. Nightwish should poach Floor Jansen as soon as possible :]
She has a good stage presence and she's easily far prettier than Tarja...
Ahem, but yeah, the gig was good, but they deserve a much bigger stage. Energetic and very metally. I like that a lot. I think I may have to go and invest in some of their CDs...
I missed the first support band but [livejournal.com profile] elijahtc said the sucked balls anyway.
The second support band was quite good. Good old skool metal with big hair and lot's of \mm/ :]
I'm not gonna rush to buy their CDs, but I'll definitely hope to see them again at some point...

Next up, Dragonforce on Friday...

197 days to go...

Oh dear, how badly do I want this...

Also, I saw a news headline this morning that went:
'Blair Kidnap foiled' or something like that, and the first thought I had was:
'And what would they do with him? Get money in exchange for not releasing him?'

This week I've been on late shift, so I've been going to the gym in the morning.
Mmmm, legs today which was great... Tomorrow I will have to see if I can get time to do calves...

199 days to go...

Wow.
The 13th Warrior is a really good movie.
I tried to watch it some time last year and thought: 'What a load of toss...'
But now that I concentrated mostly on the movie I thought it was really good.
I guess it helps that I can go fishing in WoW at the same time :)
It's basically about a fancy arab who fancies the wrong woman and gets sent to the frozen north to be an ambassador for the Arabs.
WTF?
I don't remember hearinging about ambassadors to Scandinavia back in the viking age... Never mind, I'll let that one pass...
The rest of the movie is about how he gets up north, learns to dislike our customs and then learns to respect them while figthing an evil and mysterious foe.
One thing that really impressed was the fact that all the norsemen actually spoke Danish/Swedish/Norwegian... Very impressive and very unexpected.
Not one to watch if you want a deep plot, but if you want an easily accessible movie that doesn't resuire any afterthought, this is it...

And Viking training today was great. More Dane-Axe training. Yay.
And while I'm waiting for my own Dane-Axe to be crafted, the guy who will be getting it for me said he will bring his in for me to use in the meanwhile. Score... :D

And afterwards it was off to The Dev for a drink or two with some great company...

202 days to go and February looks like it will be good for gigs...

[livejournal.com profile] super_boobies has booked the following for us:
Dragonforce 03/02 @ Astoria
Helloween 13/02 @ Koko
Clawfinger 24/02 @ The Garage

It's looking good so far.
Does anyone know of any other good gigs I shouldn't miss?

The last time I saw Dragonforce they rocked harder thanyour mom on crack despite being possible the gheyest band I'd ever seen.
That was at The Barfly, I wonder how well they'l do at a bigger venue like The Astoria. Hopefully they'll be better and gheyer than evah...

And rumour has it that Manowar might be headlining at Wacken.
If that happens, I just might get to go on stage with them.
I can not even begin to describe how astonishingly cool that would be...

206 days to go...

On one hand, merging distribution lists by hand is oring as all hell.
On the other hand, getting a new PC is pretty damn cool :)
If works as expected, then I would appear to have a new main workstation :)

The first day of viking training rocked. I have some great new bruises :D

We did axe training which was really good fun, and as the trainer said, some people have the attitude to be a great axemurdererfighter and some don't. As we were then doing a continuous circle (Everyone fighting and swapping partners when a fight ends) I saw that the German girl who fights with us certainly have that. I was put on the back foot by her ferocity. And she's a head and a half shorter than me. Nearly.
Scary, but at the same time quite fun.
Dane axe training should continue next week, which I'm looking forwards to.
I also took a few more recordings which I will upload later.

Drink in The Dev afterwards with [livejournal.com profile] londonjon, [livejournal.com profile] flavius_m and [livejournal.com profile] cyberglamour was a most excellent end to the day.
And when I went to ask if I could grab a chair from someone, who did I see but not recognise... [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren
It's funny how you sometimes don't recognise someone just because they have hairfalls in.
She joined us and we soon started talking food...
Mmmmm, food...

I'm hungry now.
But I'm a lucky man, [livejournal.com profile] super_boobies will be making food for me tonight and if it's just an iota as good as the last time she made proper food for me I'll be in for a treat...

More Vikingy Video Goodness

Good gym session this morning.
Although I'm slightly unhappy about the volume at which music is played in my gym, it's made up for by the fact that they have so many machines and pieces of equipment which my old gym didn't have that I'm content.
They have a proper abs machine, hyper extension bench, squat rack, T-bar row and lying leg curl amongst other things.
Glorious. They also have several calf machines which is great as my old gym only had one and I couldn't put enough weight on it to be properly effective.

This weekend was spent RPG'ing which was great fun.
[livejournal.com profile] blakeshell was the MC as always while [livejournal.com profile] britalian, [livejournal.com profile] galadkria and myself did our best to vanquish evil.
Sadly [livejournal.com profile] himal couldn't make it, and there was only a brief appearance of [livejournal.com profile] iamscritch.
Oh well, fortunately we all leveled up and my sudden ability to make peoples heads explode went down rather well :)

We ate a lot of food, drank a bit of beer/vodka/red wine and in the end we stopped as [livejournal.com profile] britalian was practically dead and the next day he had to be reminded of the last 30 minutes or so...
No hang overs the next day, so the intrepid adventurers continued on andamusingly laid the smackdown on a petty noble much to our amusement.
It's a remarkably dysfunctional group with severe trust issues between the characters... Highly amusing during play though.
And there were almost no doors.

I think I have a new love.
It was definitely love at first touch.
It just feels *right*...
Oh yes, at sundays re-enactment session I got some training in how to use the mighty Dane Axe :)
I think I have found my weapon of choice for the forseeable future.
I could probably find a picture for you, but as I'm at work and a bit busy, you'll need to do so yourselves.
In fact, who can find a good picture?
But I digress, it's about 5 - 6 feet long with a nice little axe head on the end. Since we *try* not to kill each other you need to have some good upper back muscles and a decent sense of balance to handle one of them bad boys.
Good thing I have both in spades.
Killing my enemies at 2 metres distance+++
See them driven before me+++
Hearing the lamentation of their women+++
:]
But yeah, It's a groovy weapon and quite intimidating. Well, let's face it, you hear about psychotic axe murderers. You don't really hear about psychotic sword murderers. As the trainer said: 'This is *not* a defensive weapon. You use it to cleave skulls...'
It was th weapon traditionally used by Huscarls (The elite tropps).
And while I remember... For those of you still wondering who the real vikings were, please note that this is the Dane Axe... There's no such thing as a Swede axe or Norwegian axe ;-)

Afterwards we had end of year drinks + buffet which was quite nice. Nothing particularly fancy, but it was nice to sit and eat with the other vikings.
Then on the The Dev for a quick couple of pints.
It's slightly amusing that they let me bring my weapons into The Dev these days. They used to take them and put them where patrons couldn't get to them :]
I guess they were afraid that my Scandinavian nature would overcome me and I would feel forced to smite any Englishmen I see and abduct the fair women...
lpetersson: (Default)
Good lord I'm tired.
Hmm, I seem to be saying this a lot recently. I wonder if this has anything to do with my re-activation of my WoW account.
Well, between WoW and four more seasons of DS9 to finish, I don't see the sleep situation getting any better.
Oh well, I can survive fine on Subway, Pro-Plus and fumes...
And my Dwarf Paladin is nearly at level 20. Hoo ray. Once he has reached that, I think I'll get my mage and druid up to that level and then try a hunter just to see what that might be like.I don't suppose anyone else here is Alliance on the Sunstrider server?

Work is busy. We seem to be stumbling from one catastrophe to another. Today one of our mail servers ran out of disk space. You would have thought someone might have noticed that, but apparently space checking is not a part of the usual morning checks.
So yeah, fun, games and a lot of moving users around.

X-Mas do with work tonight. Free beer and free food. I couldn't say no, could I? :]

I tried out the Soho Gyms near Holborn and I have decided that I will join it.
I must say though, I don't think I have seen that many gay men in one room since I was last taken to a gay bar.

And this coming weekend there's a viking show in Rickmansworth which is part of a wider charity event. I will probably go to that although the decision isn't final yet.
I will hopefully get me an axe there. I also need too put in an order for a Dane-axe and a Scram.
lpetersson: (Default)
As some of you know, I take part in Viking re-enactment and I have finally taken some photos.
They're a bit blurry, but you can't really expect people to stand still when they're being attacked with big offensive weapons :)

I'll try to put captions on sometime tomorrow...
lpetersson: (Default)
Pretty high on the list of things that amuse me are guys who are so vain, that they try to lift weights that are far too heavy for them and as a result drop the weight on their own face.
Well, that'll teach him not to try to do dumbbell chest presses with a dumbbell so heavy that he needed a friend's help lifting it and couldn't even do one bloody rep with it.
Muppet.
If you can't do a single rep, the weight is too heavy. He's lucky he didn't tear a muscle.
I kinda saw them try from a distance and moved a bit closer to help if needed. Saw they were muppets and decided they needed to learn their lesson.
They deserved it as well for not clearing the weights away they were done.
Oh yeah, I guess they were too heavy for them to move away :)
Oh well, at least I was entertained while I gave my shoulders a good work-out.
Also, I am no longer stationed at Lehman Brothers and will be attending an interview at RBoS tomorrow. So anyone who has my work address at Lehman, don't bother using it as I won't see any e-mails sent to me there.

Other than that, the last week has been reasonably quiet and uneventful.

Viking training on Sunday was good and fun. It was bloody hot and we all had a good time with no bruises worth mentioning.
I also put an order in for a Scram (A type of long knife) which I can use as a secondary weapon. I just need to get an axe as well now.
Once I have the axe I'll obviously learn how to use that. And once that's accomplished, I'll start using them two handed. Mmmmm

I'm currently watching National Treasure which is a very entertainign little action movie. Not too deep, just a good yarn. I'll definitely recommend seeing it.
lpetersson: (Default)
So, this week has come and gone and it's been OKish.
Work was boring, but I've been studying, so it's all good.
Friday I went to see [livejournal.com profile] camillat + SO and saw DVDs from the old country and ate foodstuffs from the fatherland. Also saw Bill Bailey for the first time. Very amusing.
Found my housemate sitting on the steps to our house when I came home as she had forgotten her keys when she left in the morning. Giggle.

Saturday I worked from 8 to 17:30. Ouch.
Then Cinema.
Attendees: [livejournal.com profile] purple_jo, [livejournal.com profile] walkingwhale and Jaqc.
Movie: Elektra
Verditct: OK - Worth seeing, but don't expect a fantastic, deep and meaningful movie. It's far better than Daredevil though, but that wouldn't take much anyway.
I am, however, really looking forwards to the directors cut as that might fill in some of the plot holes I noticed.
Also, the IMDB messageboards for Elektra is a hotbed of bitchiness and quite amusing :)
Sunday was gym day. Mmmm, gymming on Sundays is definitely a good idea. the place was deserted and all the equipment was available with no waiting. Excellent.
And I can nearly pull myself up. This is a great step forwards for me as I have never been able to do that before. And since I weigh 105kg (16 Stone) it's hardly easy.
Afterwards swordfighting, which was fun. [livejournal.com profile] purple_jo and [livejournal.com profile] walkingwhale came along and seemed to like it, so they will probably come along again, and they will try to drag [livejournal.com profile] penguin_worship along.
And now, bed :)
