I agree with you about criminals, but i don't know about denmark's criminal rate as I've never been there. my dad works in the probation service, and one of thousand offenders (that's the figure I'm afraid) reintergrates into society, the rest carry on being scum. He's been there now 20 years and he's tired, and realise that some people are just born to be scum by personality or upbringing. there is no changing them. if a better system can be found I'm all up for it, but as you said it's just a pipe dream of the liberals at the moment.
I think deterant would be better, maybe not this extreme, but it's an example, in arabic countries a petty thief has his hand cut off if caught, and if he does it again, he get his other hand cut off. extreme but it seems to keep people a bit more in check. murderers simpley get the death penaltey (don't agree with fully, but serial killers do deserve it in my books), and I think a lot of people would like to see pedophile's castrated. food for thought really :)
