I really know what you mean.
Back in Denmark the only person in my family I ever got along with was my dad. On one hand I love my country (Don't know about you though...), on the other hand, I know that if I were to go back and live there, I know it would kill me. In a very literal sense. And that's why I left.
I also know how you feel about the good times you've had in the past. The time I spent in Israel on a Kibbuts was the best time of my life. I was really happy there. I would happily give and sacrifice everything I have to go back and re-live those times and spend the rest of my life with those people, but sadly that can never be. Even if I went back to Israel and went to that same kibbutz, I know that it would never be the same. Ever since I left Israel, life has been one long hard slog......
Such is the way of life. Sadly.
All I can really say is that one just have to make the best of a bad situation. Life is one long series of bad situations. I know it's cliches, but cliches are created because they are true (Normally).
Your first period in Glasgow will probably be lonely and hard, but if you persevere, you'll be stronger and better for it....

I don't really know what else to say, but I hope everything will go well for you, and I for one really hope to meet you at some point....
Servus,
Mr Eleganza
