Yeah, bit of a shame really... Though on the upside it means we should be able to pick up a ton of HD-DVDs and a player / drive for pence once the stockdumping kicks off. Just like when I bought my Gamecube :D
Still, now Sony sorted their Blu-ray standards and made all their existing non-PS3 players outdated they can settle down and get on with things as they can now do all the features that HD-DVD could.

Do you remember the format war between Betamax and VHS from the 80s? It's like that. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are going to replace DVDs but different companies supported different formats, but HD-DVD has now been consigned to the dustbins of history like Betamax once was. Blu-Ray on the other hand has emerged gloriously from the battle and has been declared to be The Future...

a) HD-DVD was cheaper to licence, hence preferred by independents
b) HD-DVD was less saddled with DRM
I'll have to wait until affordable 3rd party player alternatives come along. I have issues with Sony.....
